Local MP Tariana Turia is calling for comprehensive information for the community to fully understand the implications of the removal of acute maternity and gynaecological services from Whanganui Hospital.
"The needs of whanau around birthing are fundamental to our community. I have called before, for a full community discussion - including some of our key stakeholders like the Chamber of Commerce and Employers Federation - to become involved in such a critical debate.
"In the minds of many wh?nau, being able to have access to emergency birthing care is an essential factor in creating security and safety for them in the birthing process.
"It should not be that cost becomes the predominant factor for our families being able to receive specialist or unplanned emergency care".
"We all understand there has been difficulties for the DHB in recruiting obstetrics and gynaecology specialists; so let's put attention into how we can attract specialists into the region - not just show wh?nau the road to Palmerston North".
"I would hope that Good Health Whanganui management will realise the need for a community-wide solution which addresses the fears and fallacies, while at the same time provides a quality, safe option for wh?nau, the midwifery workforce and the hospital management".
