Today's announcement of Auckland Council boundaries and representation arrangements will mean Aucklanders won't be fairly represented in the Super City, the Green Party said today.

"The Rodney district will be almost 25 percent over-represented while areas such as Orakei and Waitakere will be under represented at council level," Green Party Super City Spokesperson David Clendon said.

The announcement today from the Local Government Commission sets up 13 wards with two councillors each for seven of the wards and one councillor for each of the remaining six.

"Aucklanders will be in the unfair situation where Rodney has 54,100 people to one councillor but Waitakere has 79,350 to one councillor.

"This means the boundaries do not reflect growing populations of areas such as Waitakere, which will be chronically under-represented.

"Waitakere's already diverse communities will continue to grow, and there is no obvious mechanism to accommodate that growth. We cannot afford to let their voices be lost because Mr Hide will only allow twenty councillors.

"The choice of twenty councillors is a wildly arbitrary decision", said Mr Clendon.

"The only obvious explanation is that Mr Hide counted his fingers and toes and decided that was as good as any other.

"Lower level representation is still not adequate because single member wards have not been applied consistently across the region," said Mr Clendon.

"The way representation is structured will eventually increase the relative disadvantage of high growth areas.

"Yet again Aucklanders are not being listened to. Mr Hide is still running the show.
