Family First: Correction Should Follow Labour Apology

Family First NZ is welcoming the apology by Phil Goff for the anti-smacking law and is asking that they make good their apology by supporting an amendment to the law.

"If the Labour party and Phil Goff are genuine about their remorse, then they should move quickly to support an amendment to the law so that light smacking is decriminalized," says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.

"It is one thing to say sorry - it is another thing to actually fix the problem. At the moment, good parents are being criminalized for simply raising great kids with appropriate and reasonable correction."

"Labour should support the John Boscawen amendment, as was originally indicated by senior Labour MP Trevor Mallard when the private members bill was first drawn."

"With Phil Goff's apology, Labour can now be part of the solution of amending a flawed law and then demanding that the government appoint a Royal Commission of Enquiry that identifies and targets the real causes of child abuse," says Mr McCoskrie.
