Family First NZ is furious that the Prime Minister has effectively killed a Private Members Bill which would have reflected the wishes of the 88% who voted NO in the recent Referendum.
"John Key is acting like a dictator who has no regard for the voice of voters," says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ. "The voters clearly asked for the decriminalisation of light smacking - not 'comfort'."
"John Boscawen's amendment was virtually identical to the Chester Borrows amendment - an amendment which the Prime Minister said only two years ago "the way you send a message is to make the law clear and precise and then to police it strongly and vigilantly. My colleague, Whanganui MP Chester Borrows, has put forward an amendment to Sue Bradford's Bill that would do this. In my view, this is the correct response, and the one Parliament should adopt."1
"John Key was quick to accept democracy when he was elected Prime Minister but now he is prepared to trod over the same democracy exhibited through the Referendum," says Mr McCoskrie.
While Leader of the Opposition he said: "The Labour Government has shown utter contempt for New Zealanders and the democratic process with its plan to railroad the anti-smacking bill through Parliament, says National Party Leader John Key. 'The Labour-led Government knows the measure is deeply unpopular, so it plans to act against the wishes of the majority of Kiwis and ram the bill through under urgency. This is a deeply cynical abuse of power as Labour tries to clear the decks of this controversial issue. Helen Clark has refused to let her MPs vote the way they really think on this bill. To ram it through under the cover of urgency shows just how out of touch her government has become.'"2
Mr McCoskrie says the law is not working and Family First has published many examples of good families being prosecuted and investigated by police and/or CYF for smacking or minor acts of physical discipline. Only recently has the PM acknowledged the argument that there have been prosecutions under the new law. Previously he claimed there had been none."
"It is also hugely disappointing that the National caucus are not willing to challenge the PM on this issue when they know how their electorates feel. John Key should at the very least allow a conscience vote," says Mr McCoskrie. 1. http://www.national.org.nz/files/_0_Key_Speech_17-04-07.pdf 2. http://johnkey.co.nz/index.php?/archives/60-Labour-shows-contempt-for-New-Zealanders.html

Who is pulling your strings
Who is pulling your strings MR Key?
There is NO Rationale reason why you would not legalise the effect of what you are asking thousands of Police and CYFS workers to voluntarily apply.
Parliamnet time is no longer the issue.
The Perfect bill that describes what you are asking CYFS and the Police to do voluntarily, the bill you used to support yourself, This bill is on the table to be argued anyway!
That makes you look pretty dodgy in your true motives Mr Key!
There is no reason except that you intend this Evil Law banning parental authority to correct kids is to be applied in full force one day when the CYFS activists can get away with it.
You Defiant Naughty Politician.
You need your political Bottom smacked.
You are a jerk Mr Key. You
You are a jerk Mr Key.
You don't even have to lead this debate but that you deliberatly take a position on it is deliberate contemptuous defiance of New Zealand.
You could merely throw this open for parliament to vote on as you with vitriolic words lambasted Helen Clark for not doing and for defying the people.
You don't have to take the blame for democracy Key you can just point to the peoples will.
You are destroying the authority of parliament, parents and the positive outcomes of a society that learns discipline.
This is going to be a dark legacy for you.
You make a joke of the Law and make parliament illegitimate in its authority over the people.
Without the peoples mandate you have no right to rule.
You do Not have the peoples mandate Mr Key!
This is a Violation of Our Rights! We need to throw you out of Parliament.
The People have
The People have spoken...
Now the people need to Act
Or this lame legacy and pattern of major parties blatently defying the VAST MAJORITY will be come normal.
New Zealand must back itself and make sure the government OBEYS the people. That is what democracy is about.
Protest Day; 09/09/09 at 9am and 9pm at Parliament or your local MPs or CYFS or Police Station Protest topic. "OBEY"
Apart from the 11% and the activist media who are clearly ignorant of reason and stand in defiance of reality we the VAST Majority need to act. Nothing has changed since the beginning of this.
It started with the conversion of media commentators and seeding repeatedly the flawed "new Studies" that falsely link smacking to violence.
The studies that deliberatly will not seperate disciplined discipline from gratuitous Beating areasoning error typical of Sue and that little group of oddballs dictating to the entire country what they imagine wuld be best.
Then after about 5 years of softening up only a small pliable minority took up this propganda drive as having any merit.
The Bill was raised and as it was before it still is now, a constant 85% of people in every poll +/- 3% rejected the Foolish Evil Law.
Justice dept surveys, News Paper surveys, and internet surveys..
ALL gave Over and over the same result. Now we have an official poll on us not being defined as criminal to correct our Kids.
And now the Words must Stop.
We must act and offer only one more word to this ilegitimate Leader. "OBEY"
