Family First NZ is expressing huge concern and warning caution over the Advisory Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology's latest recommendations.
The committee has opened the possibility for so-called saviour siblings to aid not only a sick brother or sister but also other relatives such as a cousin.
"Children should be created without an underlying pressure to fulfil parental wants, expectations or medical needs, however great that need may be," says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ. "Creating children is not about establishing a 'spare parts' factory for relatives."
"There is a major ethical issue when we are deciding who gets to live or die according to what they have to offer. There is a possible and as yet unknown psychological effect of a child knowing that it was only brought into being for the sake of its sibling or relative."
The proposal also allows for the possibility that if a woman gives permission at the time her eggs are harvested, then later dies, a surrogate could be impregnated with the embryo containing her egg - also termed as creating a 'baby from the grave'.
"Once again, the right of the child to know its biological mother is being denied intentionally. There is a fine balance between the rights of parents and the welfare of the child."
"As with the earlier announcement from the committee on allowing gender selection, this latest announcement suggests a level of intention and planning in fertility treatment which goes beyond what is safe or ethical."
"A child has a right to be loved and accepted into a family, irrespective of its gender or potential benefits," says Mr McCoskrie. "These recommendations cross a dangerous line of seeing children as a commodity to be pre-ordered rather than as a gift."
