The problem with petrol pricing is the end of cheap oil, Commerce Minister Lianne Dalziel confirmed today.
"The minister's independent study of petrol pricing in New Zealand released today reported that anti-competitive behaviour is not the cause of high petrol prices," Green Party Co-Leader Jeanette Fitzsimons says.
"I challenge the Government and industry to address the real issue we face with fuel prices - that there is a fundamental upward trend in fuel prices based on the global availability of oil.
"We need to acknowledge that the supply of cheap oil is nearing its end. Despite short-term fluctuations like the recent price dip, all the evidence shows that supply cannot keep up with demand any longer and a serious effort needs to be made to rapidly adapt our economy to a world without cheap oil.
"We need to stop looking for someone to blame and invest now in more sustainable forms of mobility.
"Spending up to $8 on roads for every $1 spent on public transport denies the reality of oil prices. We need almost the opposite ratios of investment in public transport infrastructure to secure our future mobility."

I agree, cheap oil is almost
I agree, cheap oil is almost a thing of the past. We aren't going to mitigate this problem, most won't even see that Peak Oil is the problem. When the current financial crisis eases and we attempt recovery, we are going to hit a wall......the cheap energy for a full recovery will not be there, this will force us back into recession. Then we will bottom out, and start recovery again, and hit the wall a bit sooner........and again, and again, and again. It reminds me of a snake I seen in a glass enclosure when I was a kid, it was striking repeatedly at the glass trying to bite someone holding a kitten on the other side. It would strike few times....bashing it's head into the glass.....stop for a bit.....then have another go.......no hope of success.........but just kept trying. How many times will we try until we realise that the days of oil fueling our economy and society are over........and start finding alternatives and accepting a much lower use of energy. How long will we try to keep all our usless devices powered up.....our hair dryers, hair straightners......air conditioners....large cars....electric can openers.......electric toothbrushes......devices that sit on standby sucking up power not being used........how long will we expect to go on living sitting in offices while a small portion of the population toil in labor to produce all the tangible goods.......their labor amplified and multiplied by the energy unleashed by fosil fuels. When will humans finally get off their fat lazy arses and give up having everything from winding a car window down, to opening a door performed for them by a slave called fossil fuels. When will we stop investing energy in the production of throw away items....which is nearly everything nowdays......furniture.......appliances......when will we go back to making things that are designed to last for life.........rather then a few years or months in order to facilitate the purchase of more "stuff" to keep the economy growing. Lets face it....once upon a time.......a fridge was made to last.....well forever basically.....people had the attitude....that I'm moving out of home.....getting married....buying this fridge.....and that should be the only fridge I'll ever have to buy.......I might need to replace some parts in 20 years.....have some maint done.......regas maybe......new door seal....even have the motor replaced eventually......but I will never "have too" buy another fridge. Same will furniture......built to last. Pens were refillable, disposable lighters and razors did not exist. The energy invested in manufacture of items was made to return value for as long as possible. TVs were repaired when they failed....not thrown out.....only the broken part of every machine, appliance was replaced....not the whole thing. Devices were turned off and used no power when they weren't being used......now.....everything uses standby.....sucking up power even when turned off. We use power for things that serve no purpose.....like can openers........like electric clocks.......built into nearly everything. Automatic transmissions make cars use more petrol, they should only be for disabled people. The average family does not need anything above a small 1.5 liter car......so stop them having them except where there is a real need. Motor sports are nothing but a complete waste of fuel.....they are complete waste........ban them. Do away with plastic packaging for all items where it is not required for safety reasons.....and do away with plastic bags.........and bottles.....go back to glass.....and recycle without having to melt them down....just wash and use. Stop building buidings that need air conditioners to be livable.....go back to opening windows........and sweating....and tough luck for people that can't handle some discomfort....let them go and swing a pick out in the sun if they can't handle sitting in a chair in the shade without an air conditioner. Ban air conditioning in all but hospital wards......no other exceptions......period.

I aggree that cheap oil is a thing of the past and building things that last is a very good idea, but opening a window and sweating sounds a bit deppressing to me. I prefer imagining a more pleasant future, given the technology we have available for tackling these problems. Some bright people have already designed the 'eco-friendly' skyscraper.
I don't see why the best of us can't imagine a way into a better future for the earth and for us humans at the same time. As for little old me, i'll be cheering on the sidelines when it happens.
