Labour Leader Phil Goff has congratulated Len Brown on his historic win in the first Auckland super city mayoral election.

"This has been a long and challenging campaign for all the mayoral aspirants, particularly Len Brown and John Banks, and Len has done an exceptional job convincing Aucklanders he is the best person to provide leadership to bring the super city together," Phil Goff said.

"Len Brown won the election as an independent, but it is well known that he is a member of the Labour Party, in fact John Banks based his campaign on running against the Labour Mayor from South Auckland.

"I know Len shares with Labour a strong belief that assets paid for by ratepayers should not be privatised.

"As Mayor, Len is dedicated to providing a community based council that delivers for people, not one that operates as though it is a corporation.

"I have this afternoon met with Len to personally congratulate him on his fantastic victory.

"The past two years had been controversial for Auckland, with National's divisive and secretive agenda polarising opinion.

"Now is not the time to dwell on that, however. It is time for the healing process to begin, and I cannot imagine a better person to lead that than Len Brown, who has shown significant qualities in his governorship of South Auckland.

"Labour will enjoy working with the new super city, as it works to overcome the initial teething problems that will inevitably occur, and as it gathers strength in the years to come.

"Labour's vision for Auckland has been to see it as a world-class city. I am sure Len shares that vision and will progress it over the next three years."
