A total of 745 people have made a submission on a range of topics in this year’s Draft Annual Plan.

The Plan details Council services, planned activities and investments and aims to reflect the community's wishes as much as possible.

This year Council highlighted fluoridation as a specific issue in the Plan. Fluoride is currently added to the public water supplies of Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati, but not Ōtaki or Paekākāriki. A total of 627 submissions were received on fluoride alone. Of these, 366 were in favour and 261 against fluoride being added to the District’s water supply.

Council Chief Executive Pat Dougherty said the number of submissions was encouraging. "It shows we have an engaged community, which helps us ensure a wide range of views are heard, which in turn feeds into development of Council policy and activities."

Mr Dougherty says both sides of the fluoride debate were represented. "People are passionate about fluoride and it’s good to have a broad debate before deciding on an approach to the issue."

Submission hearing days from Tuesday 20 to Thursday 22 May will give the 104 people who have asked to speak about their submissions an opportunity to do so.

All submissions will be available at District Libraries and Service Centres from 9 May.
