Green Party Co-leader Russel Norman is the party's candidate for the Rongotai electorate in the 2011 general election.

Dr. Norman, a resident of Hataitai, who also ran in Rongotai in the 2008 election, was chosen at the branch's selection meeting last night.

"It's a great privilege to live in Wellington's southern and eastern suburbs and to represent the Green Party in the upcoming general election. We love New Zealand and want to protect our environment and give all New Zealanders a fair go," Dr Norman said.

"A critical issue for this electorate is National and Labour's proposal to bulldoze a four lane highway from the Basin Reserve to the airport, slicing right through the middle of Rongotai.

"Our focus is better buses and trains and giving Wellingtonians the chance to safely walk or bike. Borrowing money to build a four lane highway will increase traffic and pollution and make us more dependent on imported oil - it is twentieth century thinking.

"It's already hard enough getting across SH1 on foot, bike or even by car. National and Labour want to make it harder by making it bigger and with more traffic."

Dr Norman said his campaign would focus on maximising the party vote.
