Maori will eat more cheap junk food and their health will take a backward step if GST rises, predicts Maori Party MP Rahui Katene who will be putting a bill in the ballot today to make healthy food tax-free.
"International research proves that there is a link between poverty and bad nutrition and guess who is going to suffer - everyone in this country on very low incomes, most of whom are Maori," Mrs Katene said.
"If one banana is going to cost the same as a big packet of potato chips and a mother needs to feed three children on a measly budget, she'll likely chose the chips."
The Goods and Services Tax (Exemption of Healthy Food) Amendment Bill will address rising food prices and the impact this has on the ability of those in low income households to purchase healthy food, Mrs Katene said.
"Despite the Government's announcement yesterday that GST will be increased to 15 per cent, I invite Minister English to place my bill on the Government's Order Paper if he's really serious about helping families get ahead.
"The people of this country need this bill for the sake of their pockets, for the sake of keeping good health."
Food prices, particularly those for staples of a nutritional diet, have risen more than 20% in the last three years.
The bill defines healthy food as fruit and vegetables (including fresh, frozen, canned and dried), breads and cereals (including all bread, grains, rice and pasta), milk and milk products (including cheese, yoghurt and plain milk, but excluding ice cream, cream products, condensed and flavoured milk) and lean meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds and legumes.

Sounds like a excellent idea.

Why are so many Maori poor
Why are so many Maori poor these days?
Oh I know the greedy top echelon has kept all the treaty money for themselves.
I have a comment to make
I have a comment to make regarding your statement. Maori had always lived off the land and the sea. When you say poor you are referring to monetary values. We didnt need a lot of money to live happy and rewarding lives. On a whole, Maori dont sell land to chop it up and sell to make huge profits out of it. That has been the whole point over land issues! It is only because we poor Maoris have been forced to go and buy our food from the supermarkets that there is a problem. Some of us Maoris have already accepted the modern way of life, however, some are still living similar lifestyles as maybe 2/3 generations ago. We are still growing, transforming. Statements such as yours cause trouble and friction which is the last thing anyone wants....Maori and Pakeha.
This is in fact a great idea
This is in fact a great idea that has reached it's time. If GST goes up to 15% those on lower incomes are going to need a top up from somewhere else. Lower income taxes will be great but this bill makes life easier for those on lower incomes and will potentially achieve an important health objective. Killing two birds (or pies) with one stone.
I also agree with the idea of having the first $5,000 OR $10,000 tax free for all New Zelanders then a gradual tax system based on income after that.
Just to clarify, i think it
Just to clarify, i think it is a good idea to not have gst raised on the necessities of life. I think it is a terrible idea to increase gst and lower the top tax rate. John Key has really shown his true colours. Having the first 10,000 tax free is also great policy. John Key seems to have no will to help the poor only the rich, very sad.
