Living Wage Activists Will Confront John Key Today

Campaigners angry at the National Government's minimum wage policy will confront Prime Minister John Key today at the Big Gay Out festival, in Auckland's Coyle Park, Point Chevailer. The protest will finish off a Valentine's weekend of actions from the Campaign for a Living Wage that saw pickets on National MP's offices in Whangarei, Auckland, Waitakere, Hamilton, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Oamaru, Invercargill and Dunedin.

"Rather than protest an empty office out in Kumeu yesterday, we thought we'd come meet the man responsible face to face today" said Unite Campaigns Organiser Joe Carolan. "We've been saying that National have No Love for the Workers this weekend, so we want him to meet the people he's thrown 25 cents at today, and they want to ask him how he could survive on $420 a week, after tax. And that's not counting the 15% Goods and Services Tax he's hiking, either."

"Our low paid workers think John Key is a cheap date - so they've got him 25 cents worth of chocolates, 25 cents of roses and 25 cents worth of Champagne. They'd prefer a Living wage - we've gathered nearly 100,000 signatures to hold a Referendum to raise it the minimum to $15ph, and recent polls say that 61% of New Zealanders support our goal".
