19 March 2009 - The government has today confirmed State Highway 1 from Puhoi to Wellsford as one of the initial Roads of National Significance.

Transport Minister Steven Joyce says this part of State Highway 1 is a key strategic transport corridor for Auckland and Northland.

"This project will receive priority treatment and will be progressed quicker than might otherwise be the case."

Mr Joyce says the current Northern Motorway is subject to high traffic demand and experiences a number of bottlenecks, particularly around Puhoi.

"Further development of this route will cater for the expected future growth and development north of Auckland and ease peak and seasonal congestion."

"Focusing on the development of this route will make areas north of Auckland even more attractive for community growth, tourism and businesses looking beyond Auckland for growth opportunities." Mr Joyce says he will be asking the NZ Transport Agency, as part of the revised Government Policy Statement, to develop plans to advance these projects over the next ten years, alongside other State Highway projects around the country. Further details and more roads of national significance will be considered as part of the National Infrastructure Plan later this year.

Other State Highway projects will continue to be considered in the normal way as part of the Land Transport Programme.
