Labour Health spokesperson Ruth Dyson today paid tribute to the enormous talent and dedication of diabetes expert Sir Don Beaven who is assumed to have passed away tragically in a house fire.

"I would like to acknowledge and offer my support to Sir Don's family particularly his partner Gillian," Ruth Dyson said.

"I had the pleasure of recently attending Sir Don's 80th birthday it was a privilege to have known such a talented New Zealander who was dedicated to improving the health of Kiwis.

"Sir Don is not only one of New Zealand's foremost experts in diabetes; he was respected throughout the world for his commitment to tackling this disease.

"His work has been acknowledged throughout the world and his passing leaves will be felt by all New Zealanders whose lives have been affected by diabetes.

"His research and understanding of diabetes, particularly amongst Maori and Pacific people and the causes of type 2 diabetes helped to shape health policy on healthy eating and healthy activity.

"His death is a tragedy, but his work to ensure people understand the links between lifestyle and type 2 diabetes will continue and will be championed by people who are committed to stemming the epidemic of diabetes in this country.

"Sir Don will be greatly missed," Ruth Dyson said.
