Labour's stance on amending the Resource Management Act is contradictory, confused and confusing, says the Maori Party's environment spokesperson Rahui Katene.

"National and Labour did a deal that will harm Maori, and Nanaia Mahuta blames the Maori Party for not stopping them," said Mrs Katene. "How's that for hypocrisy?"

"Nanaia says the Maori Party missed a chance to negotiate with National to soften the blow, because she knows Maori will suffer from changes to the Resource Management Act. But she voted for the very changes that she thinks are bad," she said.

"The only parties who opposed the weakening of the RMA's protections were the Maori Party and the Greens. Nanaia is either deliberately misleading Maori, or she is seriously confused. Either way, the people will not be impressed.

"Labour blames others because they refuse to acknowledge their own party's policy and actions which have been detrimental to Maori since the era of Rogernomics," added Mrs Katene.

"On the eve of their conference in Rotorua, Labour is trying to persuade Maori that they're still relevant," said local Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell.

"But after the Tuhoe raids, attacks on the Treaty, the outrage of the so-called Crown stratum and issues of freshwater management, which are all legacies of the last Labour government, this latest trick will be seen for what it is, transparent, superficial and insincere," he said.

"The Maori Party proposed amendments calling for a stronger Treaty commitments, for iwi to exercise rangatiratanga over their whenua and taonga, and for greater Maori involvement in resource management processes. What did Labour put up? Zip!" he said.

"This an attack of the guilts by a Party who did not listen to the people when they were in power, and who are still not listening," says Mr Flavell.
