1 June 2009 - The co-leaders of the Maori Party are congratulating Ngati Porou stalwart Iritana Tawhiwhirangi who was today named a Dame in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

"Iritana has been in the front line of seeking better outcomes for Maori for more than half a century whether it be in education - as in Te Kohanga Reo movement - or in general welfare and well being," Dr Pita Sharples said. "Hers is a truly remarkable record of contribution to change in Aotearoa,"

Tariana Turia described Iritana as a wahine toa.

"Iritana is undoubtedly a wahine toa, who can be proud to join the list of great Maori women who have walked before her and contributed to the development of this country."

While Dame Iritana received the highest award - along with Dame Jennifer Gibbs and Sir John Walker - the co-leaders wanted to congratulate all the recipients.

"We are also extremely pleased to see that the work and dedication of many Maori have been recognised in today's honours list."

Both leaders are looking forward to congratulating Dame Iritana personally in the next few days.
