The loss of close to 500 jobs as a result of PPCS's decision to close its Oringi sheep and lamb processing plant is absolutely devastating for the region, says Tukituki MP Craig Foss and Wairarapa MP John Hayes.

"This comes on top of job losses at the Norsewear plant last year, and the Feltex carpet plant in 2006. The region is reeling.

"The odds have been stacked against our region's exporters, with a high exchange rate and crippling interest rates, and now workers and their families are paying the price."

Both MPs are making their offices in Waipukurau and Dannevirke available to everyone affected by the closure so they can receive any assistance that's required.

"We will work with Work and Income, budget advisory services, and any relevant organisations and agencies to help local families deal with this devastating blow as best they can."
