National Will Run Strong Campaign In Mana, Key Says

Wellington, Oct 5 NZPA - National will run a strong campaign in the November 20 Mana by-election, Prime Minister John Key is promising.

Mr Key announced the date for the by-election yesterday. It has been caused by Labour MP Winnie Laban deciding to leave Parliament to take up a position with Victoria University.

"This will be a tough campaign for National, Mana has always been a Labour seat and we are very much the underdog," he said.

"We will be fighting on our record to date in government -- we have shown strong leadership managing the country through the global financial crisis and we have been doing a lot to put the economy on a much stronger footing."

Labour has chosen Kris Faafoi as its candidate, a former political reporter who worked as party leader Phil Goff's chief press secretary until he was selected.

National is running list MP Hekia Parata, who stood against Mrs Laban in the 2008 election.

"Hekia Parata is an excellent candidate and we will run a strong campaign," Mr Key said.

"I'm looking forward to supporting Hekia and talking with the people of Mana over the next few weeks."
