Christchurch-based National MP Nicky Wagner has welcomed this new service which will be rolled out nationally over the next two months.

"I'm really pleased that Linwood will be one of the first places in New Zealand to offer this service," she says.

The new Options and Advice service, operating out of Housing New Zealand Neighbourhood Units, will provide customers with information about state and private rental housing, government assistance available to help sustain their current housing situation, and services available to help with home ownership.

"I know that many of our locals, whether they are contemplating applying for state housing for the first time or not, will benefit from the advice and assistance that Housing New Zealand will now be offering," says Ms Wagner.

"The reality is that Housing New Zealand can't offer a house to everyone. We want people to know they have choices.

"The Options and Advice scheme is about putting people who come through the door in contact with other organisations or people that can help them.

"Work and Income, along with private rental agents, has been working with Housing New Zealand to develop a range of option packages for people. The Acting Minister of Housing, Maurice Williamson, has acknowledged the support from the Ministry of Social Development during the pilot scheme.

"In offering this service, Housing New Zealand is able to help people exercise more control over their own circumstances, which can only make the experience of asking for help easier."

"The National-led Government is empowering people's decision making about housing," Ms Wagner says.

A successful six month pilot was offered in eight Housing New Zealand neighbourhood units. A further 24 Neighbourhood Units around the country will offer the service by the end of May 2010.
