Put Whaling On Trial, Not Pete Bethune

The New Zealand Government should denounce the arrest of whaling protester Pete Bethune and use all available diplomatic channels to bring him home, the Green Party said today.

"The brutal practice of whaling itself that should be on trial, not people like Pete Bethune who are trying to prevent it," Green Party Oceans Spokesperson Gareth Hughes said.

New Zealand citizen Pete Bethune of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, is on trial in Japan for trespassing on a Japanese whaling vessel while staging a non-violent protest.

"John Key's Government has refused to denounce Mr Bethune's arrest, and is leaving him to negotiate the Japanese legal system himself.

"The Government should be using all diplomatic channels available to bring Mr Bethune home," Mr Hughes said.

The Greens will move a notice of motion in Parliament today calling on all parties to support the use of diplomatic channels to secure Mr Bethune's return to New Zealand. They will also ask for an urgent debate on the subject.

Mr Hughes will also ask Foreign Minister Murray McCully directly if he will call on the Japanese Government to release Mr Bethune. It will be Mr Hughes' first oral question in Parliament since becoming an MP a month ago.

"New Zealanders have an honourable tradition of non violent direct action. In acting against the Japanese whalers, Mr Bethune was defending a view most New Zealanders share," Mr Hughes said.

"The Government's refusal to support Mr Bethune raises serious questions about New Zealand's attitude towards its citizens stuck in the legal system of other countries where jurisdiction is highly dubious.

"We are concerned that Mr Bethune will not have a fair trial in Japan. The Japanese media have labelled him a terrorist, and Japan has a poor track record of responding fairly to criticism of their illegal commercial whaling.

"It is the Japanese whalers who should be going to court for their illegal commercial whaling - thinly disguised as scientific research - in the Southern Ocean Sanctuary.

"Instead of 'compromising' to allow commercial whaling at the next Whaling Commission meeting in June, New Zealand should join Australia and prepare a case against Japan for the International Court of Justice," Mr Hughes said.

Gareth Hughes, will we see

Gareth Hughes, will we see you in Wellington this weekend when Capt. Paul Watson and the Steve Irwin are here? I do hope so.

Stupid Kiwi government ...

Stupid Kiwi government ... getting so much kick back cash from the Japanese whaling lobbyists that it couldn't care less if the stinky Jap whalers shot him on the deck of the whaling boat ...

What other reason would they have for ignoring the safety of one of their citizens ... Rotten bunch of corrupt sissies that couldn't be bothered about world opinion as long as they still get their paycheck and government perks.

Gareth Hughes it is nice to

Gareth Hughes it is nice to see that finally somebody in New Zealand has had the guts to defend one of your own citizens. Pete Bethune did not deserve to be arrested and it is disgusting that the NZ Government did not intervene before he entered Japanese waters. The views expressed by the Sea Shepherd and Pete are applauded in Australia. The only person who should have been arrested during the Whale wars was the Japanese Captain who sunk the Ady Gil and put the lives of the Sea Shepherd crew in danger. One crew member was injured and Pete had every right to act as the Ady Gill captain and demand justice. We in Australia are watching how badly the NZ Government have treated Pete and hindered his mission to stop the senseless slaughter of our whales. Surely NZ makes enough money out of whale watching that you do not need to agree with Japan on Whale slaughter. Wake up to yourself and defend the rights of Pete. Get him home to his family.

The whalers are breaking the

The whalers are breaking the law, not Pete Bethune. They call him a terrorist using what evidence ? vandalism perhaps is worthy but it ought to be the Captain of the ship that rammed the Ady Gill who should be held up for attempted murder and of being drunk in charge of a ship since the little maneuver in the South Antarctic shows. Would it have been the same if he had been held in somewhere like Somalia, Iraq, Iran etc. and called a terrorist there?

To all Kiwi's out there, avoid travel as your elected leaders are not gonna support you if you abroad.

From Scoop, "the media in Japan are presenting this issue an attack on Japanese sovereignty and their right to maintain their cultural heritage of eating whales. This was raised during a interview of Gary Thomason by a Tokyo television crew outside Tokyo prison. In subsequent period over 50 Tokyo residents questioned as to whether they or anyone they knew ate whale meat. No single person could say that they knew anyone who ate whale meat except one young woman said “maybe my great great grandmother…no one eats it any more” It would appear that the annual whale hunts in southern waters are being continued to support a politically motivated nationalistic attitude. "

From Sea Shepherd leader Paul Watson, "Whaling is the foot in the door for the economic assault on the poles".

How could Bethune put his

How could Bethune put his family through this?! What a selfish, grandiose idiot.

His actions in boarding the japanese ship are akin to *home invasion* It must have upset the japanese officers and crew a lot. Very insulting and provocative. It is not suprising at all that he should face stern consequences. Surely he must have forseen where his action would take him, and how much unpleasantness and cost would result for his family and nation.

Jeremy, Your are a complete

Jeremy, Your are a complete idiot and comments like that will just upset his family more. Pete was not just trying to save our whales but the lives of his crew. Under maritime law he had every right to board the Japanese ship after the ramming and sinking of the Ady Gill and the fact that they injured a crew member. The Japanese Captain should be the one on trial for his actions not Pete. As for the Japanese being upset who gives a damn they don't care when they upset millions around the world with their actions.

joroberts, I think I'll

joroberts, I think I'll start off as you did, for a complete idiot, you sure managed to get every point you tried to make...WRONG
1. No person has ANY RIGHT to board the vessel of another , et alone a foreign flagged vessel in international waters. This is called PIRACY under UNCLOS.The ONLY body having any type of say after the sinking are the countries of the vessels involved, that means the investigative bodies of NZ and Japan. not your dimwitted hero. If you want the Japanese Captain on trial, simply get your bozo GREEN pol to get the national legislature to file suit in the world court. It's that simple, as we both know, there are no grounds for any type of legal action against them. The whaling is done per IWC rules and regs. The whaling is done in INTERNATIONAL water. The only ones upset right now are you silly twits lying your way through any point you think you can fool another gullible person with. So far, you have yet to use TRUTH in any words you or your ilk write.

Your reply beginning "you

Your reply beginning "you are a complete idiot" indicates an agressive mentality. Bethune didn't board the ship to "save the lives of his crew". What rubbish! It was perfectly obvious what would happen as a result, and that it would cost.
