Referendum result should be binding - Conservatives

If the Conservatives get their way, the result of the asset sales referendum would be binding on government.

"Our policy is simple," says Mr Craig, "where a referendum achieves two thirds or better support of those voting, the government should not be able to ignore the people."

"New Zealand voters have already been ignored on law and order, the number of MPs, and the anti-smacking law. Mr Key has said this referendum will also be ignored, because just like the previous Prime Minister, he refuses to accept that the public, who employ him, have a right to direct his actions."

"Politicians must remember they are servants of the New Zealand public," says Mr Craig.

"The Conservative Party is committed to ensuring that future referenda with clear outcomes cannot be ignored by government."
