The New Zealand Transport Agency's work at Atiamuri on state highway one and the Te Rapa Alliance Waikato Expressway project are the recipients of Waikato Regional Council's erosion and sediment control awards for 2012.
NZ Transport Agency won the council's innovative practice award, while the Te Rapa Alliance won the best practice award. The Te Rapa Alliance consists of the NZ Transport Agency, Fulton Hogan Ltd and Opus International Consultants Ltd, while the Atiamuri site is being built by contractors HEB Construction Ltd and Goodman Contractors Limited.
The awards were handed out last night at the International Erosion Control Association (Australasia) conference in Hamilton.
The two other finalists for the regional council awards were Village Lifestyles Ltd, for a subdivision development in Pokeno, and Contact Energy's Te Mihi power project near Taupo.
The council's land and soil programme manager Grant Blackie said the awards acknowledged the "excellent examples of best practice, innovation and compliance with resource consent conditions".
Mr Blackie said the council also acknowledged the huge part played by all contractors on these sites.
"All parties who have been involved in making these sites a success are to be congratulated.
"It is very encouraging to see large projects being undertaken in a way that takes such careful account of the need to protect the environment," Mr Blackie said.
The council's earthworks site of the year awards were introduced as a way of highlighting and promoting excellence in best practice and innovation on earthworks projects undertaken in an environmentally sensitive way.
"Poorly carried out earthworks can impact on aquatic ecology and water quality in our region," said Mr Blackie.
"One of the council's three flagship goals is to sustain land and water resources in our region and it is great to see the improvement in best practice over recent years that contributes to that goal."
