17 March 2009 - Revelations the Government has asked public sector heads to look for cost savings of up to 10 per cent is confirmation it is intent on significantly reducing public services for New Zealanders, says Labour state services spokesman Grant Robertson.

"The Dominion Post today detailed the directive issued from Finance Minister Bill English to state sector bosses last year, revealed in a paper released under the Official Information Act.

"The document has exposed the Government's real agenda and it's time it fronted up and admitted to New Zealanders how substantial the changes it's planning will be and exactly which public services are in line for the chop," Grant Robertson said.

"The paper says the review is part of a "long game, not just a quick hunt for savings".

"National has a track record of cutting what are widely considered to be essential public services - services which will be even more important for New Zealanders during a recession. The public is entitled to be told what's at stake before it's too late," Grant Robertson said.

"Aside from the loss of public services, is the issue of the loss of jobs. The paper is further evidence that the so-called plan to "cap" core public service staff levels is a sham.

"It shows the Government played a cynical smoke and mirrors game with the public when Consumer Affairs Minister Heather Roy accidentally revealed the 10 per cent cuts plan and then retracted her comments.

"At the same time the Government is talking about saving jobs, it is working to axe jobs held by those providing public services by the day. People working in the state sector have families and mortgages just like every other New Zealander. Why is the Government intent on treating them like second class citizens?"
