Selwyn District Council Chief Executive Paul Davey has announced that he has decided to step down from his position when his contract expires on 30 June 2013.
Mr Davey has been CEO for nearly 12 years, and says that while he continues to enjoy the role, he is ready to pursue other opportunities.
Mr Davey has led the organisation through a time of dramatic change in Selwyn. The District has for some time been the fastest growing in New Zealand, with the population increasing from 26,000 to over 42,000 during his tenure.
"To be at the helm of an organisation experiencing such enormous growth, both residentially and commercially, has been both challenging and enormously satisfying."
"Any success I have had in my role can be attributed to a very professional and committed staff and their wonderful loyalty to me, the Council, and the community."
Mr Davey feels that a defining moment in Selwyn District’s coming of age was establishing Council’s footprint in its new building in Rolleston in 2007. We are now far more identifiable as an entity.
Other highlights Mr Davey noted included, the significant infrastructure growth particularly the Izone commercial development, the Eastern Selwyn Sewerage Scheme, Libraries, Lincoln Event Centre and the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, all catering for the variety of needs of a fast growing community.
Mr Davey would like to acknowledge the people of Selwyn for their passion for the District and their huge capacity for voluntary contribution. "This was no better exemplified by the empathy, support and commitment shared following the September 2010 earthquake."
He noted his appreciation for the vision and leadership the Councillors had shown which had provided a sound platform for future growth.
Selwyn District Council Mayor Kelvin Coe says the Council has a good working relationship with Mr Davey.
"Paul Davey is a very experienced and dedicated CEO, who has guided us through some challenging times. He will certainly be missed when he leaves office."
The Council will soon be commencing a process to appoint Mr Davey’s replacement.
