Today's revelations that the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has identified financial irregularities during the clean-up of the Mapua site and referred them to the Auditor-General just adds to the mess surrounding the clean-up says National's Environment spokesman, Nick Smith.

The irregularities were picked up during today's select committee consideration of her report.

"It is bad enough that the mismanagement of the clean-up resulted in serious problems over air and water pollution, but now we also know that there were serious financial problems.

"It is extraordinary that the $12 million contract between the council and the Environment Ministry was never signed, four years after the event.

"It is time for the Government to come clean, accept responsibility for the mess over the Mapua clean-up, and to apologise to the community for its serious failings."
