Sidney Crosby with Lord Stanley's Cup

38 years is the amount of time it's taken for a team that was 0-2 down to come back from behind and win the Stanley Cup. Dan Bylsma is the rookie coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins who now boasts this achievement. In beating the Detroit Red Wings in a seven game series with the last game at the Joe Louis Arena. Most people would think you have got to be joking!

The Pittsburgh Penguins overcame their fears to surprise coach Mike Babcock's Detroit Red Wings. Winning the Stanley Cup by a score line of 2-1 in regulation time. In the dying moments Pittsburgh Penguins goal tender Marc-Andre Fleury had to make an amazing couple of saves on future hall of famer captain (of the Red Wings) Nicklas Lidstrom. In a memorable scene in the last seconds of the game Fleury threw his body at the puck in order to keep the Red Wings out of the game as the clock ticked over. It is something that the 2003 number 1 draft pick will always remember.

The heroics of the 2008-2009 Pittsburgh Penguins team are going to go down in the hockey history books as one of the greatest comeback teams of all time. After surviving a 3-2 games down deficit in the series. Against a Red Wings team that was in rampaging form hosting a team mostly full of players who had won before and knew what it takes to win. The Penguins were hungrier to win as they had lost to the Red Wings hockey club the previous season in their own building. Winning this time around was a high priority at any cost. Seeing the look on the Penguins veteran Bill Guerin's face was priceless, it said it all. He had been through 14 long years since he had last won last & he really respected this championship.

The NHL has a lot to be proud of in making a successful playoff system. Any team that makes the playoffs has a chance of winning the cup regardless of whether they have earned home ice or not. The Detroit Red Wings are a hockey club that plays at the highest level of the competition and are well respected league wide. Most hockey experts would consider them the hardest team to beat in the league. They have been this way for over a decade. The young Pittsburgh Penguins have a genuine chance to start their winning years now. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin (Conn Smythe Trophy Winner for Playoffs MVP), Max Talbot, Jordan Staal & Marc-Andre Fleury are the future of the successful Pittsburgh Penguins franchise.

It was fabulous to see Mario Lemieux hoisting the Stanley Cup again which brought loud cheers at the Joe. He is the ethos of Penguins hockey. To be able to hand the winning years to young Sidney Crosby who has many seasons ahead of him. Pittsburgh is going in the right direction.

Congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins for their stunning upset win over hot favourites the Detroit Red Wings! It was a final for the ages and a great display of playoff hockey at its very finest!
