2009 New Zealand Rugby Schools Squad Announced

New Zealand Schools (rugby) coach Karl Jones and his assistant coach Andrew Douglas have named the New Zealand Schools squad for 2009.

The New Zealand Schools team will travel to Australia for a match against Australia Schools A and a one-off international against Australia Schools in October.

The 24-strong squad was selected from their school 1st XV teams, four regional camps, a regional tournament in July and the top four 1st XV tournament that has wrapped up in Rotorua today.

Coach Jones said picking the squad was a tough job as the players on our initial shortlist were all of a high calibre.

"This weekend has been a great exhibition of schoolboy rugby and Andrew and I are confident that we have selected a great team to take to Australia and hopefully have a very successful tour," said Jones.

The New Zealand Schools team will play the Waikato Under 20 team in a warm-up match on 29 September at St Peters School before departing for Australia.

The 2009 New Zealand Schools squad: Michael Allardice (Palmerston North BHS, Manawatu), Gareth Anscombe (Rosmini College, North Harbour), Carl Axtens* (Reporoa College, Bay of Plenty), Sam Cane# (Reporoa College, Bay of Plenty), Chauncy Edwardson (Hamilton BHS, Waikato), Hanipale Galo (Wellington College, Wellington), Norman Goodes* (Wellington College, Wellington), Antonio Kiri Kiri (Palmerston BHS, Manawatu), Steven Luatua (Mt Albert Grammar School, Auckland), Otenili Moala (Auckland Grammar School, Auckland), Maritino Nemani (Sacred Heart College, Auckland), Albert Nikoro# (Mt Albert Grammar School, Auckland), Ope Peleseuma# (St Patrick's Silverstream, Wellington), TJ Perenara# (Mana College, Wellington), Charles Piutau (Wesley College, Counties Manakau), Francis Saili (St Peter's College, Auckland), Solomona Sakalia (Wellington College, Wellington), Lima Sopoaga (Wellington College, Wellington), Michael Stewart (St Bede's College, Canterbury), Ben Tameifuna (Hastings BHS, Hawke's Bay), Codie Taylor (Fielding High School, Manawatu), Joseph Tupe* (Auckland, Da La Salle College, Auckland) Ofa Tuungafasi# (Mangere College, Auckland), Kaperiere Wharewera# (Rotorua BHS, Bay of Plenty).

Boy looking at the names and regions you cant call this a nz secondary schools team. This is a north island team representing nz.

it doesnt matter, if the

it doesnt matter, if the best are from north island than the bestare from north island....

7 auckland players.
6 wellington players
thats WUSSAP

Likewise with the Cantebury

Likewise with the Cantebury and Crusaders teams - they have bugger all true Cantab's within their ranks... so what's your point?

bro its the best nz got to

bro its the best nz got to offer if theas sum1 beta up north then down south who should get picked do the math mate

its a crock to have the two

its a crock to have the two finalists in the national competition only receive one player each in the side what a joke. obviously some of the strongest players in the country and the selectors have ignored them. how can wellington have 6 players when they blatantly weren't good enough to be in the national finals. Michael stewart is the man!!!!!

yeas michael is so fukn

yeas michael is so fukn awesom!!!! iv touched his knob....

Go figure!!! Hamilton boys

Go figure!!! Hamilton boys imported over 3/4 of their team this season .......not a school competition at all!! They even had 2 from Napier Boys from last year??

St Bedes players have all been at school for many years and only a few extras were there from this season.......but not any more than 4 players.

On another note.........I wonder how much further this PC crap can be considered before some genuine rugby heads take a stand. The rotational policy is NOT working, our players at a National level have turned soft and we are now losing our fine record of winning our national game! No one is hungry for "winning the game" anymore. Shouldnt we get back to fierce competition, hunger, passion and THE GAME OF RUGBY????

Signed: a wife of one and mother of four boys!! Harden up!! I can't stand this new age, PC, bullshit!!

Just my opinion :)

turanga brown has large

turanga brown has large package

heaps of 6th

heaps of 6th formers...........

hamilton boys high dosnt

hamilton boys high dosnt even have a scholarship programme.
students come from far and wide to be apart of what we have.
they still pay school fee's like every other student in the school
so i think that makes them a student at our school we dont import players. players come to us and yes we are the best sporting school in the country e.g[Rugby]..
and it dose look like a joke that only 1 player from our team made it in the schools side
when we made NZ rugby look like a bunch of girls when we played other teams..

politics will bern NZ rugby chose the best lol look at the ABs what a joke..

All this talk about Top4 is

All this talk about Top4 is irelevant to selection for NZ sec schools team. Congrats to Hamilton for winning top4 but this has no relevance to national selection, there was a tournament earlier this year which the top players from each regions were represented, the hurricanes team won that tournament and I guess that is reflected in the selection of these players. If we selected players just because their school wins top4 then we will definately get beaten everytime! NZ Sec schools have lost the 2 previous years to Aussie and this years coaches have obviously chosen players who they think will win against Aussie be it 6 from Wellington, 1 from South Island, 1 from Hamilton or whatever. Watched the NZ Sec schools convincingly beat a Waikato U20s/colts side as a warm up to their tour, and going by what I saw,the coaches have seemed to have a winning team!....good luck to them, somehow I think they will not need it!

Boyz won last night 22-28,

Boyz won last night 22-28, they were just edged int the 1st half then came back superbly in the 2nd. Lima Sopoaga set up most of the tries with one coming from a cross-field chip which was perfectly placed & scored by the flanker. overall it was entertaining, the boyz did good but they need to strenghthen up the scrum a bit

The tries were set up by

The tries were set up by team not one person. He just happened to be the person who passed the ball, helllllooooooo. Although the cross field kick was outstanding and.
The NZers were unorganised and a mess in the first half and had the Aussies slotted their penalties we would have been screwed. Changes made at the half changed the whole game and finally there was some organising and no more headless chickens running around out there.

Only just seen this game on TV the other morning. Was good to see the boys have a win.

PS - go Hamilton LOL - and yes, we do recruit. We are simply the pre academy for the Chiefs and shouldn't be a part of the Schools Programme, unfair playing field.

Mind you, heard that in wellington 3 outstanding players from one college when into the ballot of Wellington College and all got in, what a crock. They might have been in the ballot but were they the only 3 in there, playing on words!!
