Auckland Cricket Association is in the box seat to pick up both of New Zealand's most prestigious age-group titles today as the women's Under 21 National Championship in Auckland and men's Under 19 National Championship in Lincoln conclude with a final round of Twenty20 this morning.
Unbeaten Auckland U21, who yesterday cemented their strong title tilt by dismissing Wellington U21 for just 17 runs in a rain-reduced, 18-over T20 in Pakuranga, takes an unbeatable four-point lead into their final Twenty20 at Lloyd Elsmore Park this morning.
Auckland heads into their last match on 23 points, four points ahead of defending champions Central Districts with a maximum of three points available from the last round. Otago U21 and Northern Districts U21 each have a shot at the bronze position.
Auckland and Central Districts have dominated the country's premiere national women's development tournament in recent years, Auckland having won the trophy in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2016/17 while CD won in 2015/16 as well as last season. Player of the tournament will be named at the conclusion of the competition.
In Lincoln, the race is on between leaders Auckland U19 and defending champions Wellington U19 to claim on of New Zealand's longest standing amateur crowns.
Auckland holds a two-point margin at the top of the table heading into today's match, Wellington capable of reclaiming their title if they can beat a strong CD U19 side on Lincoln Green and Otago U19 meanwhile defeat Auckland U19 on the adjacent Lincoln No.3 ground.
In fifth spot overall, Otago U19 is the only unbeaten side in the Twenty20 phase of the twin format championship, as the only team to have picked up two wins yesterday, while CD U19 is coming off a seven-wicket win over Canterbury.
Auckland Under 19 last won the national title in 2014/15. Player of the tournament will be named at the conclusion of the competition.
