Red Bull Holden Racing Team members Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen warmed up for this weekend’s round of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship with a head-to-head battle racing around a Mangere off-road track near Auckland this afternoon.

The two teammates engaged in bumper-to-bumper door-rubbing action as they piloted their race cars around the 125-metre long off-road circuit in preparation for the ITM Auckland SuperSprint.

It was anticipated Shane would have the upper hand having raced at the circuit previously, plus the fact he claimed the NZRCA title in 2016.

"It’s true what they say about race car drivers - they are super competitive and never like to come second, irrespective of what they might be driving," said Holden New Zealand National Marketing Manager, Marc Warr.

"The closeness of the racing made for riveting viewing, let alone how close spectators were to the course combined with the massive flying jumps the cars were making as they made their way around the track."

Seven-time Supercar series champion Jamie Whincup had a torrid time holding off his younger protagonist, who showed no mercy as they jostled for position down the front straight.

Shane, currently the leading Holden driver in the 2019 championship, wasn’t shy shutting down racing room and claimed line honours of sorts in the one-off trans-Tasman battle.

The two Holden teammates were hosted by the Auckland Radio Control Car club, a long-established group of enthusiasts who engage in regular events and are in the process of moving to a brand new, purpose-built RC car facility at Colin Dale Park in Manukau.

"This is the first time the Mangere circuit has ever hosted Supercar racing and, while the drivers were a little down on total horsepower compared with their usual race machines, it was quite an experience as well as a heap of fun," said Club Race Day coordinator, Mark Houghton.

"We’ll be at our exciting new circuit in the not too distant future, so it would be great for them to come and have a re-match when they’re next in town."

Shane and Jamie will swap the off-road circuit for the Pukekohe racetrack when practise commences on Friday ahead of the two races across this weekend.
