With no play possible due to weather in the other two third round matches in Wellington and Dunedin, the Central Stags and Canterbury were the only sides in action this afternoon, setting up an intriguing final day tomorrow- weather permitting.

Overnight rain had seen covers remaining on during the morning in Stoke, with an early lunch scheduled.

Hosts the Stags needed one further wicket for the maximum four bowling bonus points, and the skies suddenly obliged at the interval to permit a start time of 1.50pm.

Seth Rance then bagged the last bonus with just his second ball of the day. Overnight batsman Todd Astle went on to reach his half century for Canterbury before Ajaz Patel wrapped up the innings shortly afterwards on 212: a first innings lead of 48 for the visitors.

Without a chance today to add to his previous days's figures, Willem Ludick finished with a first-class career-best of 4-51 off 17 overs.

Matt Henry and Ed Nuttall opened a four-prong pace attack for the visitors, Henry with a quick breakthrough, luring Stags captain Greg Hay into nicking one behind.

After Will Williams had fellow opening batsman George Worker caught at 36/2, Ben Smith and Brad Schmulian picked off the remainder of the small deficit and had nudged their side into a 21-run lead at tea.

Thick, misty cloud had hovered above Saxton Oval all day and, by the time poor light again ended play, late in the final session, the Stags still had eight wickets in hand.

Smith (53-) had reached his half century off 113 balls (2x4, 1x6) and Schmulian will resume on 42- in a 92--run stand for the third wicket.

The Stags will begin the final day in the lead by 80.

There are no Super Overs in Plunket Shield cricket.
