Ashburton's Michael Lawson and Rosemary Bennett have retained their places in the South Island Indoor Bowls Team which is to play the North Island at Christchurch on Saturday August 15th.

Christine Talbot has been named as a reserve.

Seven new caps have been named in the North Island Indoor Bowls Team and several have been recalled while the South Island team has no new caps but has recalled many very experienced players. This has been caused by the ineligibility of the New Zealand team players to be selected. The teams have been announced at the 60th Lion Foundation National Indoor Bowls Championships to compete in the 29th annual inter-island match for the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy at Christchurch on 15th August.

The North Island commences a tour of the South Island on Friday 7th August with eight tour matches. The first match is at Cromwell against Otago and South Otago combined on Friday night, then against Southland at Invercargill on Saturday night. The team then travels to Dunedin to play Otago at 11am and then on to Oamaru to play North Otago and South Canterbury at 7pm. On Tuesday the team travels to Christchurch to play Canterbury and the next day travels to Hokitika to play the West Coast. On Thursday they play Golden Bay/Nelson/Marlborough combined at Blenheim and on Friday travel back to Christchurch. The tour culminates in the annual North versus South Inter Island Match for the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy at CIBA Indoor Bowls Stadium, Kearneys Road, Christchurch on Saturday 15th August.

With the New Zealand players not eligible for selection the North Island selectors have taken the opportunity to introduce seven new caps.

The new caps are Margurrite Gerrand, Bay of Plenty, Elizabeth Morrow, North Taranaki, Lois Randall, Hutt Valley, Teri Anderson, North Wellington, Matthew Ellis, Roskill and Districts, Rodney Mills and Lance Jenner, Auckland.

Lillian Christini, Northland, Paul Smith, Tauranga, Kevin Childs, Auckland and Mike Phipps, Taranaki have been recalled. Phipps will captain the side.

Those to retain their positions are Gina Owen, Tauranga, Fiona Wilson, Tauranga, and Lisa White, Upper Hutt Valley, Sue Fleming, Hawkes Bay, Sheree Holmes, Upper Hutt Valley, Paul Psaila, Auckland, Robbie Lochrie, Manawatu, Paul Wright, Auckland and Brent Biggar, Wanganui.

In an endeavour to break the stranglehold that the northerners have had on the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy since 2003 in Timaru, the South Island selectors have gone back to players who have been unavailable in recent years but have now made themselves available again to add depth and experience to the team. Those recalled include the new National Championship Singles champion Blair Spicer, Canterbury, Mike King, Canterbury, Nigel Warnes, Nelson, Julie Dalley, Canterbury and Katrina Wealleans, Canterbury. Those players to retain their places in the team are Marilyn Holmes, Daniel French, Otago, Ann Graham, Jenny White, Ashley Diamond, Owen Ditfort, Canterbury, Rosemary Bennett, Michael Lawson, Ashburton, Christine Shand, Carolyn Cooper, South Canterbury, Elaine Carnie, Rhonda Milne, Mark Keen, Southland, Fred Persico, Nelson and Mathew Begg, Central Otago.

Altogether the North Island has won eighteen times and the South Island ten times.
