Past and present Ashes stars Sir Ian Botham, Steve Waugh, Michael Vaughan and Paul Collingwood have teamed up with Australian surfing legend Layne Beachley and Olympic swimming legend Dawn Fraser to join children from a local Sydney community in a unique day of sports activities which included traditional Indigenous games and cricket coaching.
Children from the local community welcomed Laureus World Sports Academy Members Botham, Waugh and Fraser, along with Laureus Friends & Ambassadors Beachley and Vaughan, plus current England Ashes star Paul Collingwood, who has just announced his retirement from Test cricket, to the Reg Bartley Oval at Rushcutters Bay.
The Ashes cricket legends, seven-time surfing world champion Layne Beachley and Olympic swimming legend Dawn Fraser were there to celebrate the 10th year that the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation has supported the Australian Sports Commission's Indigenous Sports Program.
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) delivers sport participation opportunities to remote Indigenous communities through research into the value of sport for Indigenous Australians, targeted coaching and officiating training and much needed sports equipment.
England Test hero Sir Ian Botham said: "Our support for the Indigenous Sports Program goes back to 2001, when Laureus had only been around for a year, so this will be the 10th year that we have been involved and we are all delighted to be here to join the celebrations. It's been a very exciting Ashes Test series, plenty of rivalry, but Michael and myself are really happy to team up with great Aussies like Steve Waugh, Layne Beachley and Dawn Fraser to do what we can to support this great project. I would especially like to thank Paul Collingwood who has been so involved in the Ashes series over the last few weeks for taking the time to come and join us today. He is one of those great sportsmen who understand the importance of giving something back to society."
Laureus Friend & Ambassador Layne Beachley said, "I didn't get the chance to surf, but it was good fun playing sport with the kids and trying to hit a few sixes off the cricket boys. The Laureus partnership with the ASC is really delivering the goods. We had a terrific visit to Jan Juc last year where young Indigenous kids who have never surfed before are being given the chance to try it out."
The children played games from the Australian Sports Commission's Yulunga: Traditional Indigenous Games resource including 'Koolchee' where players attempt to knock over a skittle with rolling balls, a game played in Central Australia. Other games included cricket catching challenges and rugby league activities involving running, passing, kicking and defending.
