Auckland, Dec 13 NZPA - Bad weather has delayed the start of the South Africa-to-New Zealand leg of the solo round-the-world Five Oceans race, organisers said today.

The five-strong fleet of 50-foot (15.25m) Eco 50s had been due to leave Cape Town today bound for Wellington, but gale force winds and huge seas off the South African coast meant there would be a postponement until conditions eased.

The race, which comprises five legs, began and will end at the French port of La Rochelle.

American Brad Van Liew won the first leg to Cape Town.
