Basketball Otago Announces New Corporate Partnership For Otago Nuggets 2010 Season

Basketball Otago announced today that a new partnership has been confirmed with OceanaGold (New Zealand) Ltd, as principal sponsor for the franchise for the 2010 season. The new name for the premier men's team will be the "OceanaGold Otago Nuggets."

Ricky Carr, Chairman of Basketball Otago commented "We are excited to have the support of OceanaGold for the coming season and out years. The new look partnership will enhance not only the premier men's team but just as importantly will provide the platform for expanded development programs in our local community. This is a great outcome for youth basketball in the Otago region and we look forward to engaging with the community as part of this partnership arrangement."

"Basketball Otago has been in negotiations with a number of players who will form a solid competitive base for the Nugget's three year term which is a new requirement of the National Basketball League(NBL) deal. "It is our intention to develop the team over the contracted period and we are confident about our longer term planning and support. We are mindful that high performance sports codes have struggled in the current economic environment and we firmly believe that we have a clearly defined pathway for our development programmes for both young men and women," said Mr Carr.

"It is important that the support from OceanaGold is applied to all levels of the game and that those engaged in all elements of the game attribute some benefit from this relationship. Miniball, secondary schools, age group and representative teams will all see positive spin offs from this long term partnership."

"We are awaiting further developments from Basketball New Zealand in the reforming of the National Women's Basketball League and in the mean time Basketball Otago will continue to support the National Women's Basketball Championship (WBC) with the OceanaGold Otago Women's Goldrush participating again in the 2010 season."

Mark Cadzow, Chief Operating Officer - New Zealand for OceanaGold commented, "OceanaGold is pleased to be partnering with Basketball Otago and the Otago Nuggets to bring an NBL team back to Dunedin. As a significant employer and contributor to the Otago regional economy, OceanaGold is particularly excited about the opportunities this partnership will provide to develop new, and enhance existing, grassroots level youth basketball programs throughout the region. We believe this is a win-win partnership for the team and the community and are looking forward to an exciting 2010 season."

NBL Chairman Sam Rossiter-Stead was delighted with the news. "The return of the Nuggets to the NBL is great news and we've been very impressed with all the work that has been done over the last few months to make that happen. This new sponsorship deal with OceanaGold is a major step in securing the team's future and that is beneficial for the entire league, not just for the Otago basketball community."
