Edwards Into Bowls World Cup Semi

1 APRIL 2009 - New Zealand's number one female bowler, Jo Edwards will meet last year's winner of the World Cup indoor singles championships, Guernsey's Allison Merrian, later today, after winning this morning's quarter-final in Warilla, NSW.

Edwards beat Merrian in the very first round of section play last week but Merrian has shown impressive form since that loss.

But countryman, Jamie Hill, has crashed out of the quarters against Spaniard, Peter Bonsor, in a tense tie-breaker, in the upset of the quarter-final round.

In the World Junior Cup, New Zealander Genevieve Baildon has just begun her match against Hong Kong China's Andrea Chan, which she needs to win to become the World Junior champion, after having finished runner-up twice in the last three years.

However, Shannon McIlroy's chance of winning the junior men's title has gone, with Scotland's Craig England winning his match this morning, so assuring the Scot the championship. McIlroy won his penultimate match this morning but needed England to lose to have an outside chance of taking the title.
