England Thrash Australia To Take 1-0 Lead In Ashes

England skittled a lacklustre Australian batting lineup for 304 to win the second Test in Adelaide by an innings and 71 runs today.

The win, which follows a draw in Brisbane last week, gives England a 1-0 lead in the Ashes with three Tests to play.

At the start of the last day, the Australians were left praying for heavy rain that had been forecast as they resumed 137 runs behind on 238-4.

But the skies remained clear giving England's dominant bowling attack the opportunity to finish them off.

In the sixth over, Australia's hopes of drawing the second Test left the field with Mike Hussey, who went for 52. James Anderson then struck twice with successive deliveries, leaving the home side without a chance back into the game.

Spinner Graeme Swann cleaned up Australia, taking the wickets of Zavier Doherty and Peter Siddle, to finish with figures of 5-91, giving England their forst Test win in Adelaide since 1995.

England now head to Perth, Western Australia, with a vital lead over Australia, who need to win the Test to stay in with a chance of taking the Ashes from the holders.

However, that job will be harder still after it was confirmed that opener Simon Katich has been ruled out with a persistant achilles tendon injury.

Scores - Australia 245 and 304; England 620 for five declared.
