The English Premier League is more than just a domestic football league. It’s a global phenomenon, the most watched domestic league worldwide and as it approaches its thrilling conclusion for this season, the drama that attracts its millions of followers is set to multiply.

The incredible 4-4 draw between Liverpool and Arsenal typified the drama that the EPL produces.

It was a blow to Liverpool’s title aspirations, the Reds, who are hoping to end an almost two decade title drought in the league, despite an impressive record in Europe, are finally challenging for the EPL crown but their defensive frailties could cost them dear.

Manchester United is in the box seat, at the top of the table with a game in hand. However, they are not steamrolling their opposition and cruising imperiously to consecutive titles while nemesis Chelsea is still hovering, rejuvenated under Guus Hiddink but slightly off the pace.

But you can never take anything for granted in the final rounds of the season.

This what makes the EPL so great, each game counts, points can’t afford to be dropped and so even home games against weaker opposition take on extra significance at this time of the season.

In addition to the title battle there is the nail baiting and often more entertaining struggle for survival.

Nothing beats the entertainment and angst of the final day when matches are played concurrently across England and this season with EPL mainstays Newcastle United and Middlesborough on the brink of relegation the intensity to stay up and closeness of the battle will make for compulsive viewing.

With the riches in television deals in the EPL, relegation from it, especially for a club the size of Newcastle is devastating.

Often the intensity and drama of survival is just as intense as the race for the title. The stakes are amazingly that much higher.

The drama of the soap opera that is the English Premier League is unrivalled, especially as we approach the concluding Act of the season.

Can Manchester United hold off their great rivals in Liverpool and which clubs face the indignity and financial catastrophe of relegation?
