Hamilton, Feb 2 NZPA - New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori says his domain is on the cricket field and he won't be running the team on a day-to-day basis.

Vettori today rejected talk of player power within the Black Caps and believed his role in the team set-up had been misconstrued.

"On the field is my domain and the manager and coaches look after everything else," he said.

The New Zealand team head into the opening match of Bangladesh's tour, a Twenty20 clash in Hamilton tomorrow night, with selector Mark Greatbatch as new coach.

The appointment of Greatbatch was announced at the weekend and follows the early departure last October of previous coach Andy Moles.

Greatbatch, who will have an emphasis of developing the batting skills within the squad, saw his new job as complementing the skipper's.

Vettori believed the position he held was similar to that of Australian skipper Ricky Ponting and South African counterpart Graeme Smith.

"It doesn't differ apart from the fact that my selection role is official," he said.

"I think theirs is unofficial and they have a huge say in their team and what goes on."

While Ponting and Smith worked closely with their coaches, the responsibility for their team's performances was on them, "just like it is on me".

Vettori said he was answerable to his fellow players and to the management team headed by Dave Currie.

"Like any manager, he takes control of most things, but when we step out on the field, like every captain, it's my role to lead the team."

He said the only player power in the squad was the power that players had over their performances.

"That's the only way this group of guys is thinking," he said.

"They have to perform and stay in the team, and they have to win."
