Abu Dhabi, Yas Marina Circuit

November 5th 2009 - Well the final race of the season has come and gone with the results being pretty much unimportant as it was seen more as a good launching pad for next season. A good result in this race might have given some of the teams a mental boost for next year but having been such a topsy turvey season nothing can be certain for next season.

Qualifying saw ex defending world champion, Lewis Hamilton, stake a bid for a better season next year with pole position, and the two Red Bull drivers, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, picked up 2nd and 3rd place respectively. They were followed by the two Brawn drivers, Rubens Barrichello and current world champion Jenson Button, again showing the dominance of these two teams this season. Ferrari on the other hand had a terrible qualifying session with their drivers picking up 11th and 20th - dead last!  So if they were looking for a points boost to launch into next season, or to jump McLaren into 3rd spot on the constructor’s championship, they have left themselves with a whole lot of work to do to get there.

The race itself was pretty straightforward when after 19 laps Hamilton retired with a brakes problem.  This saw the next 4 drivers finish in the top 4 in nearly the same starting order, except for the two Brawns who swapped positions. So Sebastian Vettel picked up another victory for the season securing himself a fantastic result of 2nd in the championship, and his team mate's 2nd place saw him finish 4th overall in the championship. Barrichello's 4th was enough for him to keep 3rd spot overall and Button's 3rd saw him finish the season as world champion by 11 points. The fight for 3rd and 4th in the constructor's championship never arose as all 4 cars from the two fighting teams, McLaren and Ferrari, failed to pick up any points from the race, which saw McLaren keep its 3rd place overall with a 1 point lead over their long time rival. Brawn took 1st overall with Red Bull picking up 2nd.

Also news has come through that Barrichello will be leaving Brawn next year and will be joining Williams, and there is bound to be a lot of seat jumping for the drivers before next year's race start.  With only 128 days until the next season, I’m sure there will be a lot of work being done between now and then to get next season's cars up and running.
