29th May 2009 - The Monte Carlo, Monaco, race on the Formula 1 event calendar is, and may always be, my favourite race of the season. Not because it produces a lot of overtaking or amazing spectacles of head to head racing, but because of the one word real estate people love to use, ‘location, location, location’! You don’t get anything, and I mean anything, better than a street course through the amazingly beautiful, and hugely affluent, streets of Monte Carlo.

However, I missed it all!  Well the live action that is. A big night of drinking for a celebration on the Saturday night meant I missed the qualifying, then a day of recovering from aforementioned night of drinking, and an early night, meant I missed the race itself on Sunday night. But thank goodness for Sky TV as I was able to catch a replay of the race on Monday night.

As far as the live racing went though, I didn’t miss much as the year’s results so far continued as normal with only one major exception. Ferrari is back!

The qualifying had Brawn dominating but showed Ferrari storming back into contention with a 2nd and 5th placing for their two drivers. Brawn picked up 1st and 3rd showing that though Ferrari is fighting back, Brawn is still very much in control.

The race, however, showed Brawn’s absolute dominance of this season with Button picking up his 5th win and their 3rd 1-2 finish. Ferrari had easily their best result, taking 3rd and 4th, showing all other teams they are back and could still be title contenders this season. Toyota on the other hand has fallen from grace.  With their two drivers only managing 10th and 13th place at the end of the race, their 3rd placing in the constructer championship is starting to look very shaky. They will need to improve a lot over the coming races if they hope to continue what was a great start to the season and hang onto that 3rd place.  But with Ferrari quickly catching up to them, they may not be holding 3rd for much longer.

Next race is in two weeks in Istanbul, Turkey.
