June 10th 2009 - There weren’t many dramas this last week in the build up to the Turkey Grand Prix but you can feel the tension building. Decisions are going to be made very soon on the future rules of F1, which could mean a major shake up among the teams. Could there be a two tier system within F1? Could there be a breakaway championship? Or will all this posturing lead to nothing and they end up getting back to the business of trying to win races? Well that story is for another day.

Qualifying went by with not many surprises.  Ferrari showed their continuing improvement by picking up a solid, if not unspectacular, 6th and 7th.  Toyota half made up for their recent poor performance on the track with Jarno Trulli picking up 5th, but his team mate Timo Glock could only muster 13th.

So the top 4 places were left for Red Bull and Brawn to fight over, and Sebastian Vettel, the recent recipient of a prestigious driving award, topped off his good week with a pole position.  Button 2nd and Barrichello 3rd kept Brawn looking strong and Vettel’s team mate, Mark Webber, picked up the 4th place.

The pole sitter has won this race the last 5 years running, so things were looking good for Vettel but, as they say, history doesn’t always repeat.

Vettel lost the lead after only a handful of corners as he ran wide allowing Button to sneak past.  After that Button never looked back, leading through until the finish and picking up his 6th win of the season.  His team mate, on the other hand, had a shocker as he quickly lost his 3rd placing and slipped down the pack until he eventually retired from the race.

Red Bull Racing had a great race picking up 2nd and 3rd but as Vettel started from pole, they may see it as an opportunity missed. At least as a team they gained more points than Brawn and reeled them back in a bit to keep the constructors championship alive.

We now have a two week break until the 8th race of the season at Silverstone, England.
