Sport and Recreation Minister Clayton Cosgrove said a special function to thank sporting volunteers will be held in the Westpac Arena in Christchurch this Sunday to mark the start of Volunteer Awareness Week (15- 21 June).

Around 1.1 million New Zealanders volunteer in some capacity, and around half of these volunteers are sport and recreation volunteers.

Mr Cosgrove will be speaking at the event hosted by Sport Canterbury, along with other special guests including the former Silver Ferns captain Anna Stanley (nee Rowberry). The government's new billboard and radio ad campaign to thank volunteers will also be showcased.

More than 130 volunteers are expected to attend, with many staying on afterwards to watch Canterbury's Skope Tactix take on Wellington's Pulse in the ANZ Netball Championship.

A media release will be available on the day, and media are welcome to attend. What: Function to launch Volunteers Awareness Week and to thank sporting volunteers Where: The Westpac Arena off Jack Hinton Drive, Addington Raceway, Christchurch When: 3.15pm, Sunday 15th June, 2008
