Golf: A Braai At The Masters – Don’t Bet On It

“An Ambition Unlike Any Other…Why the Master’s Champions Dinner may never be the same.”

These thoughts come from Brian at Global Golf Post who informs his readers that, “You’ll have to excuse a rusty Charl Schwartzel for missing the cut at the Jo’burg Open…turns out the reigning Masters champion has bigger fish to fry. Or South African beef to braai.”

Rather remarkably it appears the possibility of this taking place at one of the last male bastions of the golf world does not strike a chord or discord with the American golfing media. The only other reference available on a Google News search was a German web site.

In case you’re not aware, the menu for the Champions Dinner (All those guys who’ve won the Masters) is decided by the previous year’s winner and I would have liked to advise you of Gary Player’s choice. However I can’t find a source and I’m of the opinion that even Gary wouldn’t have the gall or balls to request a Braai for the menu.

But wait there’s more, than just the matter of smoke rising from the braai and mingling with the branches of the old oak tree outside the Augusta National clubhouse. “Chef” Charles will do the cooking.

Michael Vlismas, also at Global Golf Post goes into some detail on Charles’ planning.

“I’ll keep it very simple. Ideally, I would like to have a few lamb chops, some fillets, and of course, some boerewors (a traditional South African sausage)…I have a special spice which I put on my boerewors.”

Charles, please don’t bet on it happening at the very conservative Augusta National. Apart from anything else it would create a precedent. And in the case of “Cambo” or one of the up and coming Kiwis winning The Masters I’ve a feeling he’d be told, “Sorry you can’t dig up the lawn and do a hangi.”
