Golf Blogger has reviewed Breaking the Slump: How Great Players Survived Their Darkest Moments in Golf—and What You Can Learn from Them
It’s written by Jimmy Roberts who has worked for ABC, ESPN, and NBC. So the credentials are good, but what about the content?
Golf Blogger gives it: Grade: B+
Teacher’s Comments: Good, but it could have been much more.
At Amazon it’s gone from $24.99 to $9.19 and from what I read; Golf Blogger’s comments and reviews in Amazon. It sounds like a good idea to have it on your bookshelf, if you’re a golf book collector. But alas since I’m currently in a slump, I’ve been unable to find a wee gem or swing secret that could turn my game around.
Golf Blogger writes; "Breaking The Slump is a slim volume containing eighteen chapters on how sixteen professional golfers, one President and a professional skater first fell into—and then worked out of—a golfing slump."
It appears that it’s all in the mind for most.
How they got there, and how to get out of it.
"Most of the players interviewed identified bad mental habits as the source of their woes. David Duval says that above all, you must protect your confidence. Justin Rose tells us to avoid negative thoughts."
Then there’s "Paul Azinger learned from a carnival boxer to imagine himself winning. Greg Norman stared at clouds."
Mike H (Amazon reviewer) writes, "Roberts does an excellent job of taking inside the psyche of professionals to see how they have dealt with disappointment. My daughter, a teenage golfer, recently read this as she was having "breakdowns" on the course after a bad shot or two. Reading the book has given her new insight that everyone has bad shots, bad days, bad rounds. Now, she's much more able to move on and get back into the moment. I highly recommend this book. It's also a very well written book."
After reading about the book, which I will no doubt buy for my bookshelf, my thoughts are that it’s of the self-help/inspirational genre. And it just happens to be about golfer with the exception of Dan Jansen, the speed skater.
Alas there’s no simple solution to overcoming a slump as suggested by the following.
"Greg Norman was golf's biggest star when he misplaced the key to victory. One day, he stopped his convertible and just stared at the clouds. When he started the car again, he had a "free mind".
