Golf: Coming To Kiwiland - Authentic Arrowtown

Authentic: Definition – Not false or copied, genuine.

In a golfing context, I’ll tell a story to make my point.

Thomas (His chosen English first name) is a wealthy Hong Kong, Chinese chap and an acquaintance who’s been there and done that all over the golfing world. As befits a man who’s able to pay the massive fees for membership at Mission Hills in China.

In reply to my question as to why he found playing North Berwick, so memorable, Thomas said, “It’s authentic.”
Thomas, meaning with no disrespect to the Old Course, Carnoustie, Royal Dornoch et al. There’s something about North Berwick that is soooo Scottish. The stone walls, the seaside and “Redan” the most copied golf hole in the whole of the golfing world.
Trust me Arrowtown is authentic Kiwi right down to the Honesty Box for green fee payments.

And how about this for a wee country course?
Arrowtown Golf Club recently won the New Zealand Golf Course Superintendents Association (NZGCSA) Environment Award.

“The picturesque Arrowtown Golf Club is set in Central Otago, one of New Zealand's most historic and scenic regions. The course is located on an undulating 55 hectare property and managed by a team of three full-time staff.
The playing surfaces use species that provide high quality surfaces under a low input maintenance regime. The greens, tees, fairways and mown roughs are all browntop dominant and of superb quality. The judges found the setting, which has been maintained in an environmentally friendly way, to be truly inspiring.”

By the way Kauri Cliffs came second.
