“Most annoying golfer – Bernhard Langer. I love Bernhard, he’s a lovely guy but I can’t stand playing with anyone who plays slowly.”

Not really a full expose of the thoughts and actions of Colin Montgomery but nevertheless, Neil Squires does a good job in interviewing “Monty”.

Athleticism but alas no finesse

Responding to the question, “What makes a champion golfer in this era?” Colin replies, “In our day it was a case of having the talent and the mental attitude. Now the fitness thing is huge. Gary Woodland is an athlete and so is Brooks Koepka. They play a very similar type of golf. If you look at Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth – they are all fit guys. Justin Rose too. He’s stronger than he might look. You’re an athlete first now and then a golfer.”

However in response to the question, “Is golf as watchable now?” “Monty” said, “The standard now is incredible but there is less finesse.”

More than just a pension plan

Neil observes, “You’re playing in the US Senior Open next week. At the same time, the European Tour stages the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama. The over-50s tournament has the bigger prize fund. What is going on? To which “Monty” replies, “People don’t realise how good the rewards are in seniors’ golf. I started off thinking it might be a good pension. Well, it has gone beyond that. I’ve earned nine and a bit million dollars in the five years I have been on the Champions Tour. It’s a hell of a pension. The US Open winner next week gets $750,000.”

Monty’s competitive drive?

Of course it does help when you’re over 50 and have the chance to win $750,000.

When asked, “Do the competitive fires still burn as brightly?”

The answer comes, “Same as ever. They haven’t diminished at all. The desire is still there. I played with Tom Watson the other week in Japan. He’s coming up 70 and, my God, is he driven? I hope I’m that competitive at that age.”
