John Huggan (Huggie) of The Scotsman is; I’d say if asked, my favourite golf correspondent but I’d sure like to know why he repeatedly has a go at Steve Williams.
This week his article in The Scotsman starts; “Tips for the Tiger: Nine ways for Woods to improve himself and golf”.
And coming in at number 9
“Fire your caddie
Go on, make us all – journalists, spectators and, most of all, photographers – happy. Get rid of golf's biggest boor. Banish him forever to New Zealand. Anywhere will do though, even if nowhere will ever be far enough.
As to Huggie’s other eight “improvement” ideas click here.”
It seems that almost simultaneously with Huggie’s outpouring, Jessica Halloran of Australia’s The Sunday Telegraph penned her article, “Williams is the Tiger tamer”. And just maybe provides an answer for Huggie’s dislike of Steve.
Steve says, "Take a walk in my shoes and see what we've got to put up with and try to deal with. When you're caddying for Tiger, you have to deal with increased media attention, increased television attention - there's a lot of people that want a piece of him."
And perhaps there’s the answer to my question. Huggie wanted a wee bit bigger piece of him (Tiger) than Steve the Tiger tamer was prepared to let him have.
Jessica writes, “The big New Zealander is both caddie and bodyguard, the one man who can tell Woods what to do on the golf course and get away with it.”
The bodyguard role described thus: “It will be Williams' job to make sure Tigermania doesn't get out of hand at Kingston Heath this week, to make sure his man has the best chance of winning despite the sideshow that swirls around them. Woods attracts obsessive attention, relentless camera-clicking, bad manners - and Williams tries to control that environment the best he can.”
Jessica also reminds us that the biggest cheque on offer this coming weekend in the Southern Hemisphere, won’t be in Aussie but in little ol’ NewZild; The $US2million Kiwi Challenge.
Where I’m told, or so Jessica tells me, last year at this event, Steve made his debut as a television commentator. Presumably deleting the expletives he his renowned for both on and off the golf course.
My thought for the day from Steve; "Take a walk in my shoes and see what we've got to put up with and try to deal with.”
