Golf in Godzone: Greg Has A Go at Kiwi Ineptitude

It’s not often a well-known NZ golfer is mentioned at Bloomberg. But there again it does relate to financial matters.

Dan Bayes at Bloomberg writes, “Having Woods in the field is no guarantee of a lasting legacy. His appearance at the 2002 New Zealand Open was soured by bad weather and mismanagement that reduced the event to “an absolute circus,” said Greg Turner a former touring professional from New Zealand who won 12 tournaments.

“The business plan was to make money and they jacked up the price of tickets tenfold and then some more,” Turner was cited as saying in the Sydney Morning Herald on Nov. 7. “It alienated people.”

Peter Williams at the New Zealand Herald also has something to say on the matter.
It's [The excellent Aussie organization] all so far removed from Tiger's visit to New Zealand seven years ago, a visit ruined by bad weather, bad management, bad public relations, and an unenthusiastic government.

It does appear that in New Zealand, apart from the yachting fraternity, management of high profile events and related financial matters has been found wanting.

The NZ rugby ‘clean stadia” fiasco comes to mind and now that the All Whites have won $NZ 10 million it is to be hoped this windfall will be well managed.

A May 05 NZH headline reads, “Williams trying to woo Tiger back to NZ”.
Let’s hope Steve is as good a salesman as he is a caddie.
Steve is on record as saying, "Before I finish working for Tiger I will get him back here because the first time didn't go how I wanted it to go.”

“Didn't go how I wanted it to go.” Sounds like Steve has also learned some diplomatic skills along the way.

Given that Steve has a tough selling job to do, and may not succeed. He has said, "And if not for Tiger, then I would not mind who I caddied for, if I could win it. It would mean a lot to me."

Correction: It appears I got it wrong, re New Zealand soccer’s new found wealth
Fred Woodcock at The Dominion Post writes, “You could say it was a $13 million save. But to Tony Lochhead, the man who thought he'd cost New Zealand a spot at the biggest sporting show on earth, Mark Paston's heroics were priceless.”

Alas given the performance of the Kiwi golfers in Aussie, they won’t be in a position to donate some of their prize money to NZ Golf. Only 25% of the 16 Kiwi golfers made the cut.

Thought for the day on management matters and managerial attitudes.

Bill MacGowan CEO of NZ Golf, "We are not disappointed to have lost European Tour sanction for the NZ Open."
Geez I wonder what it takes to make MacGowan mad as hell?

New Zealand's sports

New Zealand's sports administrators couldn't run a chook raffle at a pub. Rugby is in turmoil because of an arrogant CEO, league was also that way, and we all know what happened there. NZ Cricket at present is a complete joke run by a gutless wonder. and it will be interesting to see what NZ Soccer do with their new found fortune. Having been involved in Sports administration in Australia for many years, I sit back now and watch the way Sports administrators in this country ruin everything they touch, mainly because they are arrogant and don't have the skills for the job.

Have to agree with you here.

Have to agree with you here. When it comes to sports administrators NZ appears to have adopted the 'Peter Principle' which states that people get promoted to their level of incompetence. This could also apply to some of the coaching positions.
