Jack's Point

It’s on again and we’re off to Jack’s Point very soon.

It does appear that the good news is spreading throughout the world
Why just last week a group of Americans paid a visit to my home club.
And I was kinda surprised to learn that they had included Jack’s Point in their itinerary.

Surprised because it’s still a relatively new course; officially opened less than a year ago, and it’s already on the must-play list for overseas golfers.

What’s also very good about Jack’s Point is they serve great breakfasts at the clubhouse.
Neal who at the weekend I was talking to about our forthcoming trip, recommends the bubble and squeak, with poached egg topping and side serving of home-made sausage. What chance haggis on the menu? Naw not even if this part of the world but maybe a wee bit of black pudding like they serve at Kingsbarns.

Having enjoyed it so much last year it was a no-brainer to include it once again in our southern sojourn.

For those golfing folks who are not familiar with Jack’s Point. Here’s some snippets which should provide motivation to include it when you are in the Queenstown area.

This from Best of Golf New Zealand
"With a backdrop of 2300 vertical metres of the razorback Remarkables mountain range and an armchair view of an outstanding lake and mountain panorama, Jack's Point Golf Course is not only one of the most spectacular in the world, but as an 18 hole par 72 championship course it offers golfers of any calibre a challenging and unforgettable experience.

And this from Golfers Dream
"Set within a 3,000 acre nature preserve on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, Jacks Point has sweeping lake and alpine vistas with a 360-degree mountainscape. The course is bounded by the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu. It traverses through wetland to the lake edge encountering steep bluffs, indigenous vegetation and wildlife and is designed to work with nature, not against it. The fairways have been designed with minimal excavation and careful plantings to complement the natural environment."

The folks at Blanket Bay have included some great photographs which includes one showing the hole with that damned dry stane dyke-The 13th I recall and how can I forget it.

And I have to agree with the web site’s comment about the 15th – “Reminiscent of the highlands of Scotland, this challenging par 4 hole has 4 elevated tee locations to choose from, all striking across rolling grasslands, rock walls lining the fairway, with sheep grazing either side and Cecil Peak looming over the green.”

So watch this blog. Coming up, reflections on my return to Jack’s Point.

Thought for the day based on talking about breakfast and playing at a location you've come to love

"I always wanted to live where one could practice in one's pyjamas before breakfast" - Dr Alister MacKenzie.
