Golf in Godzone: The Real Cause of Cambo’s Collapse?

Several days ago I read Adrian Prozenko’s article, “Campbell backs his two-handed approach to life with Skins event”.

The “Skins event” in Sydney is something I covered some time ago so there was nothing new to the story except a wee bit more about Daniele Maisano. The man who is the driving force behind the Streetworx charity.

And there was also reference to a letter Cambo received from Jack Nicklaus shortly after Cambo won the US Open. Included in the Nicklaus letter was the suggestion 'Look Michael, now it's your turn to give back.”

And so Cambo proceeded to spend even more time helping charitable causes.

Didn’t think much more about the article, my mind pre-occupied with thoughts of Jack’s Point.

That was until I saw it from a different angle at Golf.com’s “Truth’s & Rumors”.

“Jack’s letter hurt Campbell’s game”

There’s no doubt something has hurt Cambo’s game but how much can be put down to an over-emphasis on charitably giving it back?

This from an October 25, article about Frank Nobilo at Stuff. “Honest Frank doesn't mind venturing where others fear to tread. His take on Michael Campbell's nosediving career is a good example. Nobilo believes Campbell has lost his desire for the game.”

If Frank’s assessment is to be believed then it’s going to take more than a shift in priorities to achieve a Cambo comeback.

By the way in case you’re not aware, Cambo’s up against Geoff Ogilvy in the Dec 07, Streetworx Skins in Sydney.  And Stephen Fleming fronts up against Shane Warne. Something Stephen got used to on the cricket field.

Let’s hope Shane doesn’t resort to sledging should he find himself dormie down to Stephen.

Re my previous blog about the journey back to Jack’s Point. I have to add we are also playing Millbrook. And since I’m not a big fan of Millbrook I’d like some feedback from those who enjoy what The Best of Golf in New Zealand says, “is without question one of the finest alpine golf courses in the world.  It's a 6412 metre, par-72 that is relatively wide open and trouble free for golfers of all handicaps.

They got the final part of the last sentence right but dunno about the opening comment.

For overseas readers planning a trip to the Queenstown area and have a wee bit of (thrifty) Scot’s blood in them. I recommend the Queenstown Golf Club, aka Kelvin Heights

Alas they’re coring the greens right about now so we’ve decided to give it a miss this time round.

Guid gowfin’ at the weekend.
