“Bob would say, ‘come on, we’ll go up to the salt mines,” recalled Harrington. “That, of course, was going up to the practice range. To most people, going to the salt mines would be a miserable thing. There are a million sayings he’d come out with.”

An effin’ spade

Over at The Herald Nick Rodger headlines his article, “Padraig Harrington reflects on the enduring influence of the late Bob Torrance,” and reminds us that Bob’s language “Could often be, shall we say, colourful. Torrance would call a spade an effin’ spade but, like many golfers who were inspired and educated by Torrance’s all-embracing tutelage, the musings and sayings remain seared on the mind.” which brings me to something I dug up on another Scottish tabloid, the Daily Record.

Plumes of fag reek

Nick writes, “With that instantly recognisable, rasping growl, Torrance would deliver great pearls of golfing wisdom while, more often than not, wreathed in gently billowing plumes of fag reek.” And Neil Cameron over at the Daily Record writes, “Scots golf coach Bob Torrance blasts ex-pupil Marc Warren over flash lifestyle,” and whilst this was written way back in July, 2008 were Bob alive today he’d still be fuming and reeking of fags and no doubt thinking there must be lots of ‘salt mines’ in Asia when you see the results the Asian lady golfers are achieving. And following up by suggesting some underperforming Scottish pro golfers should go find themselves some salt mines.

Back to the salt mines
Neil writes, “With Torrance it always comes back to Harrington - and little wonder. He said: "I went to Dublin last week to see Padraig. He said, 'Just come out at 10 o'clock, look at a few swings and see if we have anything to work on'.

"We left the range at 10.30 at night. That was 12-and-a-half hours. He has a practice area at his house in Dublin, a bit of ground over the wall that is cut like a fairway.”

Quote of the Day
"I'll tell you who worked harder than most people think - Sam Snead. He practised every day of his life.” – Neil Cameron quoting Bob Torrance
